All I need is a paint application that allows to create diffuse and normal directly to 3dcharacters. Probably be a good idea if they went back to the developer and cut a deal for designer and painter. I would have throught RL would have emphasize Substance Painter, since they promote the Designer.
3D COAT SMART MATERIALS PRO
The Pro version is only $59 Substance Painter is $150 for Indie and it would probably be best to have Substance Painter which is close to the same price. What about the ? I've not read much about it, but the file exports is awesome. Then you would love smart material. It is so easy to make good looking texture with this. I love to paint things ^^) most of them are drafts but I like to inspect my handwork LOL (here is a quicky 3dcoat render just of a semi toon sort of hard surface thing I painted up in it. Recently I started messing with the render options in 3dcoat and there is some animation capabilities but I dont know what they are as I purchased 3dcoat for organic modelling and texturing, but I will explore that next. So really you need not spend a dime if you dont want to. In truth though blender will do anything those other things will do. Using voxels to scuplture is very very fast because its not just surface modelling. I guess if your looking for value and can't make friends with blender 3dcoat is probably the better option. I use blender a lot still but I enjoy the way 3dcoat works for organic type stuff. prior to that I used 3dcoat and blender to make all my normal/displacement maps depending upon the object. I also use the substance designer for my normal maps etc for sculptures now that I made friends with it. I make my normals and other maps for hard surface models now inside the substance designer.

I paint my organic models in substance painter. I paint my hard surface models in 3dcoat and not blender. I use blender for hard surface modelling and 3dcoat for anything that has to do with sculpting for organic things (characters mostly). I love to paint up models I make all fancy like.
3D COAT SMART MATERIALS MOVIE
My favourite passtime I hate to say it these days is not movie making but painting models lol. As an all in one 3dcoat is probably the better option. I paint in 3dcoat quite often moreso then with substance painter.

I use both of them and they both have different benefits. The other packages are just for textures. The thing about 3dcoat is its also a modeller etc etc. I have all the toys actually now but 3dcoat you can paint so you would need to purchase substance painter.
